Early in his naturopathic practice, Gary Young (the founder of Young Living) began to study the properties of melaleuca (tea tree) oil. He was disappointed by the lack of results, and became disinterested. When he learned that there are different grades of essential oils sold in America, he found and tested a top-grade melaleuca oil. This time, the results were remarkable.
Essential oils helped Gary so much with his own health that he created Young Living – a company dedicated to producing the finest essential oils possible. Young Living has 4 farms worldwide, and grow many of their own plants from seed. Where their own supply is insufficient, they will outsource essential oils under the strictest guidelines for production and distillation.
Every essential oil sold by Young Living meets the world's highest standards, to achieve the label of “therapeutic-grade”. But more than that – Young Living takes extraordinary care to preserve all of the fragile chemical constituents of the essential oils, and to avoid any possible chemical contamination.
To this end, their essential oils are taken from plants grown on organic soil - land free from pesticides, herbicides, and other harmful chemicals. Plants are harvested at the peak time in their annual growing cycle (when their essential oil is richest), and wherever possible the soil is enriched with organic nutrients. This produces a healthy plant with an abundance of life force, and an enriched essential oil.
The plants are cut and steam distilled in small batches for extended periods using special proprietary low pressure, low heat, vertical steam technology. This ensures that all of the fragile chemical constituents of the essential oils remain intact, and end up in your bottle! Costly stainless steel cookers are used, which do not react with essential oils the way that aluminium, steel or copper can – thus avoiding any potential contamination.
Every batch of oil - whether from herbs grown at their own farms, or outsourced - is quarantined, inspected, and tested for purity and quality with both organoleptic and chemical analysis. Samples are sent to independent laboratories for analysis by state-of-the-art, high-resolution gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and infrared spectra analysis. These tests unmask the chemical anatomy of each oil to monitor quality. Altogether, Young Living oils can go through five separate levels of quality analysis before they are released. If a batch of essential oil does not meet their strict requirements, it is rejected.
It is the stringency of their production process that allows Young Living to guarantee that all of their essential oils are of the finest quality, and therapeutic-grade. Click here to learn more about the Young Living farming practices.
